Charles Darwin & The Galapagos
When setting off from England in 1831 for a five-year voyage, Charles Darwin had little ambitions for ground breaking scientific research.
After surveying the coasts of South America, the ship stopped over in the Galapagos Islands. During his visit to the islands, Darwin noted
that the unique creatures were similar from island to island, but perfectly adapted to their environments which led him to ponder the
origin of the islands' inhabitants. Among those that struck Darwin so greatly were the finches that are now named in his honor. Darwin
would later base some of his thought from the supposing that these finches were all descendants of the same lineage. Years later in
1859, Darwin finally consolidated all of his observations into his famous book On The Origin of Species, drastically and
controversially altering the scientific view on the biological origins of life.
Angels, Turtles and Magic:
A Week in the Galápagos
By Katie Devine
We are here, in the Galápagos
Islands, for a week long retreat.
The word “retreat” has never
felt more fitting than it does
here, where the main
attractions are nature
and animals and are so far
removed from the constant
traffic and smog and noise
of Los Angeles....
A new friend's thoughtfulness, a day spent on the water,
wonderful and nutritious food, swimming with the fishes
(literally), FINALLY SEEING A REAL LIVE SEA TURTLE
AFTER 20 YEARS OF LOVING THEM!

Laughing uncontrollably at chef-on-a-boat,
Jesus-on-a-boat, song and dance.
The awesome power and fragility of nature-being
so close to raw birth, life and death.
The reminder that humans easily cause fear.
Kindness means we walk among all creatures
quietly and with respect- their fear is as
painful as ours.
A giant tortoise walking slowly by the yoga room
as we did a beautiful Jen Pastiloff candlelight
Talking laughing planning crying snoozing and
early morning tea with the Devine roommate.
Quinoa croquettes, tamarind sorbet, fresh made
juices and Ecuadorean ceviche.
Warm sand banking the bluest water.
Survival is not about the fittest it is about the
animal that is nimble and creative and open
enough to adapt.
The enthusiasm with which 9 of us sat on the
last night making a fire without wood but
with magazines, journal papers, and candy
bar wrappers to ensure we could burn
what we wanted to leave behind.
Being reminded that Courage cannot always
be planned for. Pause and treasure bravery
in retrospect. How hearts pounding we
gracefully met the sharks and kept
