The Studio Hall

with antique Tibetan furniture, and features a grand fireplace lined with hand
crafted tiles and crowned with a mural by artist Michael Brown.

More about the rooms & property:

Private Room
The main house has a private bedroom which is located downstairs and has a
queen size bed and a claw foot tub and fireplace. It offers privacy for a couple.

The Sleeping Porches
Based on the belief that it was healthy to sleep outdoors, homes built at the turn of
the century were sometimes constructed with screened in sleeping porches. There
are three such porches.

All three porches are covered by the roof of the main house and screened for
comfort. Because of the giant oaks that surround them, they have the feeling of
sleeping in a tree house. They sleep one to two people each, and one of the
porches is weatherized and heated in the winter for the cooler temperatures.

The Chumash sleeping porch is winterized and has two single beds. The Kinder
Room sleeping porch has one single bed and is adjacent to the upstairs
observations deck (see photo). The Alaya sleeping porch has two beds and is not
winterized.

The Kinder Room
The upper floor of the Pratt House also includes a second large bedroom with its
own entry from the hallway, three twin size beds, its own grand fireplace, and a
screened sleeping porch leading to the upper veranda. The room is appointed in
the warm and simple manner of the rest of the house, and shares a full bathroom
with the adjoining Alaya Master Bedroom.

Kitchen

Veranda
Echoing the synergy and balance with nature that is the Greene brothers' hallmark,
THE VERANDA is partially covered by long sweeping eaves, and partially open to
the warm sunshine streaming through the trees at various times of the day. There
are three large tables and the patio will seat over 40.

Their notable use of "clinker" bricks as the top facing for the surrounding walls, as
well as planters and rail posts gives the porches a rugged, yet natural feeling that
has withstood the test of time for nearly a century.

A koi pond is encircled by the half moon of the veranda. The gentle sounds of the
falling water help to create a peaceful ambiance as one takes in the natural beauty
of the surrounding gardens and mountains.

The Great Room

The Dining Room
A most unique space in the home, the dining room is a gem of Arts and Crafts
architecture. The room is constructed with four different types of wood (redwood,
Port Orford cedar, maple, and fir). The majestic ceiling rises to 15 feet, accentuating
the dramatic lighting fixture designed by Greene and Greene and created by Tiffany
Studios. Hand-made with rubies and jade from Mary Pratt's gem collection, the
hanging fixture emulates a Chinese paper lantern with it's delicate simplicity.

Built-in cabinets with clear glass panels display an impressive collection of period
ceramics and stemware. From the rich tones of the woodwork to the fireplace
framed by finely laid brickwork, the warmth of this elegant and intimate room is
easily felt.

East Gardens and Outdoor Firepit
The Lavender gardens feature an abundance of lavender and aloe plants. In the
midst of the gardens is a rugged outdoor firepit that was excavated next to a large
boulder-- providing a cozy spot to sit and talk, or silently enjoy the warm, hypnotic
dance of flames on cool evenings.

The excavation uncovered many Chumash Indian hand tools used at this very spot
where they too once gathered. These tools are on display in the main house. The
estate and the encompassing Stewart Canyon are registared Chumash Indian
archeolgoical sites

Kitchen and Orchard
For those who appreciate the fruits of the earth, an organic vegetable and herb
garden flourishes in a 3-level terraced bed. In addition, the scent of blossoming
orange, lemon, grapefruit, and guava compliment the budding seedfruit of apricot,
pomegranate, almond, nectarine and fig trees in the orchard. Hand-laid stones
tumbled smooth over the ages below line the contemplative walkways that wind
through the gardens.

Clorine Free Swimming Pool and Hot Tub
The pool and hot tub are custom-built to match the style of the early 1900s, and are
both bordered and accented with natural rock from the barranca. Paths of hand-laid
stone lead into the swimming area from two entryways, while banana trees and
aromatic flowers cover the surrounding wrought-iron fence, offering both privacy
and sensory delight at all hours.

The Great Lawn and Dhyana Platform

Rolling downhill from the south of the house, a large expanse of manicured grass
stretches between the pool and the vineyard. Now bordered by a hand-laid stone
pathway, this space was undoubtedly well-used when the Pratt's had gatherings
larger than their home and its generous porches could accommodate. At the base
of the great lawn and framed by hundred year old oaks is the Dhyana Platform.

Organic Vineyard and Winery
Using natural compost and wildflower cover crops, the small certified organic
vineyard produces five different types of grapes- Syrah, Grenache, Cabernet
Sauvignon, Merlot, and Viognier.

The Kiva
Designed by artist Skip Shuckman and Bill Moses, The kiva serves as a sacred
place to commune with the natural elements. Traditionally, kivas were used in
Native American cultures as a community gathering place, to discuss issues in a
circle format, to heat stones for a sweatlodge, or to sit in silence around a
communal hearth.

With a seasonal creek flowing alongside the kiva, it's head-high stone walls, ceiling
open to the sky, and unrefined beauty, the kiva is a fitting meditation on the
interrelation of the elements.

Hiking Trails
Casa Barranca's 54 acres are traversed by the Pratt Trail which leads into the
adjacent Los Padres National Forest. With a network of connecting trails
accommodating both novice and experienced hikers alike, the Chumash
archaeological area offers breathtaking views of the Ojai valley, its natural
landmarks, and surrounding mountains, canyons, and waterways.
